Woken up by lion eating cow
The sound of a lion roaring close by is deafening, the sound of them growling while crunching bones is even more chilling. The vibrations from that alone woke me from a deep sleep. Sawyer only woke up once the hyenas came in. He is very familiar with their calls and can imitate them pretty well! He said "hyena making noise, make stop", then rolled over and slept again. We thought it must have been a zebra or young giraffe, but it landed up being a lost cow from closest masaai village.
Within two hours the whole cow was flattered. We went to investigate the kill in the morning, taking along the camp askari's (camp guards). The killing of any livestock is investigated, so that the community member who owns the animal can be compensated. In return, no predators are allowed to be killed by the community. The masaai traditionally kill lion as a right of passage to become a warrior in the community. Compensating for livestock losses has drastically minimized this practice.
